This case study comes from Kerry who was looking to replace her old and worn out driveway with a decorative gravel driveway. She wanted a strong driveway that would not allow gravel migration and would not be too hard or labour intensive to install. Kerry decided that she needed to find a suitable gravel retention grid, read on to see what product Kerry decided to use:

Project

Kerry started researching online for the best possible gravel grid system and soon came across our website and found our X-Grid® Gravel Driveway Grid and began reading up on its many qualities. She compared X-Grid to the qualities she was looking for:

Kerry wanted a strong base, X-Grid® can hold up to 420 tonnes per m². She wanted the base to retain her gravel, When filled X-Grid® creates the prefect gravel parking surface which will not suffer from rutting, pot holing and gravel migration. She wanted a system that would not be hard to install or labour intensive, X-Grid® is lightweight and easy to lay thanks to its specially designed slot and peg system.

Kerry ordered 26m² of X-Grid® the same day, her order was packed the next day and delivered to her via pallet delivery just a few working days later.

Work

With the grid delivered to her home, Kerry could begin installation as soon as she was ready.

She began the installation by removing as much of the existing driveway as she could. She dug down to ensure there was room for a sheet of membrane, a layer of sharp sand and then the X-Grid®. With the previous material removed and disposed of, Kerry began by laying the sheets of membrane across the entire area. Membranes are used to allow water to drain away naturally whilst acting as a barrier and stopping weeds from growing up and through the gravel.

On top of the membrane, Kerry began laying a layer of sharp sand and compacting it down as well as she could to create a solid sub-base on which the X-Grid® would sit. As you can see from the photos, the sand was very level before any grid was laid.

With her sharp sand layer compacted and complete, Kerry could begin installing her X-Grid®. She started in one corner and began laying one panel at a time and simply connected each piece together as she went along using the slot and peg system that allows for easy install and relocation if needed. She repeated this process until the entire area was complete which was very easy to do so.

Finally all that was left to do was for Kerry to fill the entire area with 14mm Pink Granite gravel to complete the project. Around 8kg of gravel is needed to fill each panel so you can estimate how much is needed to fill the full area. We all agree that her new driveway looks amazing!

Conclusion

Kerry is very pleased with her new strong, decorative and migration free gravel driveway!

Kerry told us: “I knew the ‘theory’ was good but the practice has proved better than we could have ever hoped. We have a great looking drive that is stable to walk and drive on and the gravel (14mm pink granite) stays in place.”

A big thank you to Kerry for using our X-Grid® and for sharing photos and information of her project with us. Should you have photos to share of your project or have any questions regarding our products then please do not hesitate to contact us.
