X-Grid® Garden Pathway Customer Installation

X-Grid® can be used in a number of different ways. From being used for car parks, pathways to even campsites and equestrian zones. Receiving great feedback on our own manufactured product is a great feeling both knowing what we have created works but also makes the users happy. A couple got in touch with us as they were looking to pave their garden and were looking at other alternatives to concrete or loose gravel. This is when we pointed them towards X-Grid®. Read on to find out what product David and Sharon decided on and how the project ended!

The Project and Product

When it comes to creating the perfect pathway there are a X-Grid® Garden Pathway Customer Installationnumber of things to consider before embarking on the project. First is what material to use, should we use concrete, gravel or even wet pour rubber? Next is what additional products do we need, concrete edging, permeable paving grid or a concrete mixer? Finally is where exactly is the path going to start from and end? Planning ahead and outlining the path means there will be no uneven surfaces or wonky edging when the project is complete. David and Sharon decided to use X-Grid® (permeable paving grid) and to fill it with decorative gravel.

X-Grid® is a permeable paving grid which can be used both commercially and domestically. Made from 100% recycled plastic, our grid is SuDS complaint (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) and allows surface water to drain away naturally whilst still being a strong support. We had X-Grid® tested by Lloyds British and when unfilled, the grid could withstand up to 420 tonnes per square metre. However, as well as being incredibly strong and permeable, our X-Grid is also UV, chemical and weather resistant so there is very little chance that you will need to replace any of the panels for a number of years! The Work

X-Grid® Garden Pathway Customer InstallationDavid and Sharon planned out the project before ordering any X-Grid®, so they were able to get straight to work as soon as the grid was delivered to them. They began by creating a rough outline of where the path would be. So where the path would start and end.

With the outline marked out, they began to remove the existing turf and ground down to a depth of around 80mm. This gave David and Sharon enough room to lay each part of the installation. Once the excavated materials had been disposed of, they began to lay a sub-base of hardcore which was compacted down to create a solid foundation on which to stand the X-Grid®.

On top of the hardcore base, a layer of Geo-Textile Membrane is laid. The membrane is then secured into the ground using either Black Plastic Fixing Pegs or Metal U-Pins. The membrane allows the water to drain away whilst stopping weeds and plants from growing up and through the grid.

Next, on top of the membrane the X-Grid® is installed. When creating the grid we wanted a strong but also easy to use product which is what we have done by using a simple slot and peg system. This allows large projects like David and Sharon's (50m²) to be completed quickly whilst still having a quality paving product. Finally, once the entire area had been covered with X-Grid® they filled the grid with 10mm Limestone Chippings, around 8kg of gravel is needed to fill each panel of grid so take this into account when purchasing your gravel.

Conclusion X-Grid® Garden Pathway Customer Installation

David and Sharon are very pleased. They were very impressed with both how easy the X-Grid® was to use and by how well it has performed so far. A testament to the strength of the grid is that motorbikes and a boat trailer are being stored on the X-Grid®. We would like to say a huge thank you to David and Sharon for using our product and then sending us the photos and information to create this case study.

As we're sure you'll agree, their garden path is looking amazing! Should you have any photos of or any questions regarding our products then please do contact us.
